Our black soap starts where it always has — West Africa. The base is made by harvesting plantain skins and cocoa pods, sun-drying them, then slow-roasting them into ash. That ash is combined with palm kernel oil and shea butter and hand-stirred for hours until it forms the dense, dark bar you see today. No shortcuts, no synthetic fillers. Just a process that has been passed down through generations of Ghanaian women who knew exactly what skin needed long before modern skincare did.

Not all shea butter is the same. Nilotica shea — harvested from the eastern shea tree found in the Nile basin regions of Uganda and South Sudan — is rarer, softer, and significantly richer than the more common West African variety. It has a naturally higher oleic acid content, which means it absorbs into the skin almost instantly without any greasy residue. It's also more potent in Vitamins A, E, and F, making it one of the most nourishing butters found in nature. We use it cold-pressed and completely unrefined so every one of those nutrients makes it into your bar and onto your skin.

Coconut oil earned its reputation for a reason. Rich in lauric acid — a medium-chain fatty acid with powerful antimicrobial properties — it goes to work on the bacteria that cause breakouts, body odor, and irritation. In the bar, it also creates the kind of thick, creamy lather that makes cleansing feel like a ritual rather than a chore. We use it raw so none of its natural properties are lost in processing.

This includes linoleic and linolenic acids, which are essential for maintaining healthy skin barrier function. Vitamin F helps reduce moisture loss and is traditionally used to help calm irritated, dry skin. Studies show fatty acids can support skin's protective layer.
